Mother Sews Best

🪡 The Common Thread No. 34

Hey Reader!

Did you know sewing isn't the first hobby I had? Before finding and falling in love with sewing, I tried multiple other hobbies. First was pottery. My husband and I had been married for about a month when I had the great idea to sign us up for a pottery class. The idea was great... but you know what wasn't great? He was amazing at it and I sucked. Needless to say I'm too competitive for that nonsense, so I immediately started looking for something else. 🤣

I started crocheting, and I actually really loved it! I made itty bitty shoes for the baby I had just found out I was pregnant with. And when I say itty bitty, i mean they somehow ended up so small that they didn't fit her when she was born. My very first mom fail!!

I remember working so hard crocheting lots of stuffed animals for a craft fair at a local church to only sell one. And I'm pretty sure my mom bought that one. Thanks mom. And please, for the love of all crafters in the world, don't sell something that took at least 2 hours and $10 in materials for $12. Bless.

Here's 19 year old me on the way to the craft fair sporting a crocheted necklace I made that I thought was the peek of fashion. Bless again.

A few months after that was when I borrowed my grandmother's sewing machine and immediately went to Youtube (this was 2011, there was no Pinterest yet!) to try to figure out how to thread the machine. It's actually amazing I kept trying to learn after that experience. 😵‍💫 There were hundreds of videos but somehow none of them actually taught what I was needing help with!

Once I finally got it threaded it was time to start sewing- YAY! I was ready to jump into a complicated project that I was sure would be easy for me, because that's just the insane confidence I have about any DIY project (am I the only one??). Lo and behold it actually was hard and I became very confused very quickly (imagine that). The pattern was talking about all these terms that I was just supposed to know already and I had to stop every five minutes to figure out what selvedge and bias tape and darts were. All of which sent me back down Youtube rabbit holes that made me want to cry. 🫠

When I say it took me YEARS to get even decent at sewing I'm not exaggerating. I sewed my little booty off, but everything I made looked soooo homemade; not handmade, HOMEMADE, if you know what I mean.

In 2020 after 11ish years of learning to sew the hardest way possible I was finally really freaking good at it and decided to start teaching other moms how. The biggest reason I wanted to help other women learn to do this was because sewing had been such a huge positive part of my life that I wanted other women to experience that, but I didn't want them to have to learn the way I did, depending on Youtube, Pinterest or outdated blog posts.

I spent months thinking back on everything I had learned about sewing over the years, mapping it out on sticky notes and rearranging it 100 times to determine what is ACTUALLY the best order to learn all the different sewing skills in. Because there is definitely a best order to learn to sew.

Since then I have taught thousands of women how to sew and it has been one of the biggest joys of my life. Truly.

At the end of this month, I'm hosting a free workshop where I am going to give you the exact steps that you should take to learn to sew if you are at the beginning of your sewing journey like I was when I couldn't figure out how to even thread a dang bobbin.

It's exactly what I wish I had been given as a young mom looking for a new hobby. I hope you will join me, because I'm cheering you on so hard and I can't wait for you to fall in love with sewing like I did!

Taos Jacket

By Styla Patterns

This is the Sewing Society’s project this month, and it has honestly been so much fun to work on together. We invited Jenn, the pattern designer, to join us for the sew along, which made it extra special. She walked us through the construction step by step and shared so many insider tips along the way.

One of the highlights was her detailed tutorial on how to lengthen or shorten the sleeves, so everyone could customize the fit to their own body and style.

Fashion Fabrics

Along with the Taos Jacket, we also highlighted Fashion Fabrics as our go-to fabric shop for this project. Their boucle fabrics are hands-down some of the softest, fluffiest fleece you can find, making them absolutely perfect for a cozy jacket you’ll actually want to live in. The texture and quality elevate the finished jacket that will make it hard for you to take off.

When you’re learning to sew, one of the biggest reasons people get stuck isn’t lack of talent, it’s not knowing what to focus on first (or second, or third...). It can be easily overwhelming when you start on youtube, head to pinterest or take on a project that's beyond a beginner's skillset in hopes that you'll be able to piece it all together. That’s why we’re hosting a free So Long Sew-verwhelm Workshop on January 28th, where we’ll walk through a simple, proven roadmap that shows you which skills to learn, in what order, and how they all connect, so you can move forward with confidence instead of confusion.

And one of the most helpful things you’ll get from the workshop is the Path to Sewing Workbook. It’s a visual roadmap of the sewing journey, clear next steps, and easy-to-reference guides for things like fabric types, needle guides, and troubleshooting references.

Instead of trying to remember what you heard or hunting through notes later, you’ll have a simple, organized guide you can come back to anytime you feel stuck or unsure about what to work on next.

Ok to Wake Clock

By Dreamegg

I have a 6 and 4 year old who love me so much that the thought of staying in their own beds is the most heartbreaking thing they can imagine. 🫠

It has been messing with my sleep so much that I figured I would try an ok to wake clock. I've heard of them for years but just assumed that my kids would not care one cent what color a clock was, they would just still march down to our room at 3 oclock and proceed to kick me in the back until the late hour of 6 am when they were wide away and ready to start the day.

But to my utter amazement (knock on wood), it's been working!!! Occasionally they still come downstairs, but my husband or I carry them right back up, and having that visual reminder that it's not time to get up is enough to keep them there.

This one is exactly like the Hatch light, and already much cheaper, but I just checked and it's also 32% off right now! Do yourself a favor and snag one!

Ashley

What makes this message so special is that MSB Live student Ashley's kids got to see their mom's learning process up close: the trial, the mistakes, the perseverance, and the pride that comes at the end. Stories like this always make me emotional, because this is why I do what I do!

"One of the coolest things about doing this course is that my kids are seeing me learn a new skill, getting frustrated, and keep trying. I'm not sure that I've so overtly modeled that for them. A lot of my growth and learning during their lives has been in my head. It's cool to have something I can hold."
