🪡 The Common Thread No. 36

Hey Reader!

After 84 days, January is over! 🎉😅 It felt like the longest month ever lol. Who else is ready for SPRING??? 🙋‍♀️ This month I made a pair of jeans, and honestly it stretched me! I actually love a challenge in sewing (and life in general) so I enjoyed this project a lot! I went on a DEEP dive learning more about pants fitting, sewing denim and crotch depth (not something you expect to read in a typical newsletter🤣).

I have to admit something to you... these jeans aren't perfect. Shocking I know. Now I have to admit something even more scandalous for a sewing teacher to say... NOTHING I MAKE IS PERFECT. Everything has little mistakes. Most of them people would never notice. Sometimes I pick things out and redo them, but sometimes I leave them... I know! 😱 If you have felt perfectionism holding you back in your sewing, just know that even people who are "experts" make mistakes. And it may sound cliche, but you will never grow and learn if you don't make mistakes! So here's to embracing the mistakes, becoming BFFs with your seam ripper and not letting perfectionism hold you back. ❤️

Quilted Chore Coat

By Wellspring Designs

This cold weather has me thinking about warm weather sewing, but before I dive into swimsuits and shorts, I want to sew up one more cozy make, and the Quilted Chore Coat by Wellspring Designs is it!

This coat is designed for everyday wear, has a relaxed fit, roomy pockets and inclusive sizing! The best part is Casey from Wellspring Designs has a Quilted Chore Coat Quilt Along, a relaxed 4 week sew-along to help walk you through every step of making this coat.

Cottoneer

Natural Woven Fabrics

Cotteneer Fabrics is my go-to source for beautiful woven and quilting fabrics. They carry high-quality, natural fiber fabrics that feel incredible to sew with and hold up really well over time. If you love working with cottons, linens, and beautifully designed woven fabrics, this shop is going to be your new favorite. Plus their customer service is amazing, so if you need help you can reach out and talk to a real person for advice.

If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at the Fableism line. It’s my absolute favorite. The colors, texture, and quality are stunning, and they sew up like a dream.

This week on the 'gram I shared my favorite sewing tools and y'all went nuts for them! In case you missed it, I featured 4 sewing tools from Madam Sew that I can't stop using!

The first is my hemming foot, no more ironing, this hem foot does it all in one step, and makes hemming so much faster.

Next is the tube turner set, so I can turn straps right side out in a matter of seconds without a safety pin!

Then there's the hot hem ruler, which lets me iron directly on it, so I can get accurate presses without melting my ruler. 🤯

And last is Madam Sew's electric scissors, which is a gaaaame changer for cutting out pattern pieces. They work so much better than regular scissors!

Pattern Tracing Wheels

I ordered these for sewing my jeans and oh my goodness, I'm obsessed! How have I been sewing for 15 years without these??

Samantha

Samantha is such a brave, committed and enthusiastic student of ours. We love how dedicated she is to trying new things and exploring techniques she finds a little intimidating! There is something so special about trying a new skill and learning from our mistakes, something that happens often when learning how to sew!

"It's not done yet, but this is how the dress is turning out! Surprisingly putting the zipper in was the easy part even though I was scared of it! Thank you Amelia McCall for being such a great teacher and giving me the confidence to learn this and do it!"

-Samantha

Creating comes in so many different forms. Did you know that there's even such thing as a fabric pattern designer? My mentor Bonnie has a FREE workshop happening now: Print & Pattern Revival where she will walk you through how to create your own repeating patterns (no experience necessary!) plus she will walk you through her proven Pattern Path that can take you from a curious beginner to a licensed designer! Plus so much more. Sign up for the workshop by clicking here!
